Interestingly, most of them also express proper levels of villin as well as functional receptors for peptides and hormones existing in vivo [81,127,129]. Nevertheless, considering that not all hydrolases are present (e.g. lactase) and the enzymatic activity (e.g. hydrolases and sucrase-isomaltase) is lower than Caco-2 cells and the human small intestine, they cannot be properly considered as a reliable model of small bowel enterocytes [81,127].
