Abstract

Polydimethylsiloxane implants containing progesterone or estriol, placed in close proximity to the left epidymis, released sufficient amounts of the hormone to induce atrophy of the left testis. The weight of the other testis was not influenced. Measurements of testosterone and FSH concentration in peripheral plasma and of fertility indicated that the function of the pituitary-hypothalamo axis was not inhibited. Progesterone and estriol were released in sufficient amounts to reduce 5α-reductase activity in the prostate. In progesterone treated animals the activity of 17β-dehydrogenase was increased.
