Investigational Approaches for Studying the Structures and Biological Functions of Myeloid Antimicrobial Peptides

Part of the book series: Genetic Engineering: Principles and Methods ((GEPM,volume 15))

Abstract

Macrophages and neutrophils are phagocytic leukocytes of myeloid lineage, arising from hematopoietic precursors in the bone marrow. Neutrophils are short-lived cells which are terminally differentiated as they enter the circulation, whereas macrophages derive from circulating monocytes which mature into specialized cells in various tissues including lung, liver and skin. The phagocytic and microbicidal functions of neutrophils and macrophages provide an essential component of the host’s defense against colonization by a diverse spectrum of potential pathogens.
