Kursel et al. found that Drosophila virilis sperm exclusively contain recently evolved and specialized Cid5 centromeric histone proteins (magenta), which localize proximal to telomeres (green) on sperm chromosomes (blue). In contrast, somatic D. virilis cells exclusively express ancestral Cid1 centromeric histones.
